A small treasure at Calke

Front board of Whole book of psalms

Happy 2016! This tiny volume (in 32mo) was discovered in the stores at Calke Abbey a few years ago (NT3182987).What makes this so special is that it is covered in red silk and embroidered with silver and gilt metal.

The volume is The whole booke of psalmes … (London, imprinted for the company of stationers, 1627) [ESTC Title page of the Whole booke of psalms (1627)S90762]. A separate piece of paper inserted in the book suggests that it came to Calke from the Whitaker family through Sir George Crewe’s marriage to Jane Whitaker in 1819. This particular edition (attributed to the printer F. Kingston) is only known in 2 copies on the ESTC.
